Round Meadows
Although Round Meadows is only 13 miles from Whitefish, it presents a rural ski experience. It’s rare that skiers will encounter other ski parties on this trail system. Trails travel through meadows and evergreen forests and offer views of the Whitefish Mountain Range. Round Meadows is named for the meadow along the Round Meadows Loop. According to the U.S. Forest Service, about 12,000 years ago, when the continental Ice Sheet retreated, large blocks of ice remained. The blocks’ weight created depressions in the ground, which resulted in shallow lakes. Gradually the lakes filled with silt and organic matter, creating the meadows we see today. When snow melts in spring, the meadows fill with melt water and once again resemble lakes. All trail intersections have trail signs. Surface quality: Machine-groomed weekly and skier-tracked.
