Kensington Metropark Trails
Planners foreseeing the growth of recreation in the mid-20th century did things right when they proposed this beautiful park in western Oakland County. Set amid the Huron River Valley, Kent Lake, which is the heart of the facility, sits in a perfect glacial depression surrounded by hardwood hills. It’s actually a dammed portion of the Huron River. Over the decades more amenities have been added, from sailboat rentals and great fishing to the golf course. And naturally, when cross-country became popular, why not (planners reasoned again) add Nordic skiing to the park? The result is three great trails all linked to form a network that runs parallel to the western shore of Kent Lake. The glacial moraine geology of the area makes for great hills of up to 200 feet in height. A ski trip here also give families the opportunity to experience winter wildlife closer than you probably ever thought you could get to wild deer and other park residents. Surface quality: Single track set trail and skating land groomed as conditions permit.
