This hike takes you through the 12,000-acre Caribou– Speckled Mountain Wilderness on the way to the summit of Caribou Mountain. While Caribou is a relatively low peak (2,800 feet), its summit is bare and provides views in all directions. Caribou is in the less visited Maine portion of the White Mountain National Forest. While you will see other hikers on a summer weekend, you are much more likely to encounter long moments of solitude than in the Presidentials or on Franconia Ridge. The unique perspective from the summit also makes this a nice change of pace from bagging all of those 4,000-footers to the west.
