NOTE: TRAILS.COM HAS BEEN INFORMED THAT THIS TRAIL IS NO LONGER OPEN FOR MOUNTAIN BIKING!!!! Located on the east side of Peoria. Despite the fact that it begins in an industrial area, the trail along the river is rather scenic. You'll travel about five miles one way on a wide path, and ten you'll need to ride roughly seven miles through a paved residential area before continuing again in Detweiller Park, where you'll find another four miles' worth of loops. By the time you get to Detweiller Park, the trail picks up again and the real mountain biking begins. In Detweiller, there are actually three trails from which to choose. These loop trails are quite demanding because of their narrower single-track. You'll also have to contend with many obstacles in the dense woods--such as fallen trees--on these unmaintained trails. Of course, what will really get you are the hills. The climbs will be challenging by central Illinois standards, but the view of the Illinois River will be worth it. At the water crossings, be prepared to ride over logs.
