Trail of Tears State Forest
At Trail of Tears State Forest you won’t find showers, electricity, playgrounds, swimming, fishing, boating, or even a pop machine. You will find more than 5,000 acres of beautiful, densely wooded, rugged hills—the easternmost outliers of the Ozarks, with the long, narrow ridges and steep slopes more characteristic of neighboring Missouri than Illinois. Best of all, you will find 14 of the most secluded yet accessible campsites at any state park, where you can camp in solitude far from the nearest neighbor—assuming anyone else is even camping there.
