I have hiked and camped all over Illinois, and lived within 30 miles of Lodge Park for half of my life. I’ve even worked occasionally at Allerton Park, just 8 miles away. Yet until I began researching this book, I didn’t know this little gem of a campground existed. According to the ranger at this Piatt County Forest Preserve, most people don’t. Lodge Park encompasses only about 500 acres straddling the Sangamon River. It doesn’t have a Web site or offer a brochure or even a campground map. Visitors who stumble across it are often just as pleasantly surprised as I was.
