Saganashkee Slough
This large lake, not really a slough, attracts many ducks, fishermen, and birders. Nearly every dabbler and diver known to have occurred in Illinois have been recorded here. Birders have seen 19 species of ducks at the slough on a single day in fall. It’s one of the most dependable spots in the Chicago area for seeing western duck species such as Canvasbacks and Northern Pintails. Birders found 47 Common Loons one October. Another time, 100 Franklin’s Gulls sailed over the slough during fall migration at dusk. In addition, birders have documented 100 breeding bird species at the slough and bordering trees and shrubs. Key birds: Migrating waterfowl, including all three mergansers (spring or fall), and gulls. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, and helpful general information.
