Woods Mountain and Mount Machebeuf Trail
Denver, CO

Woods Mountain and Mount Machebeuf Trail
This hike offers solitude for you since most hikers favor the Herman Lake Trail and also plenty of soft tundra to keep your dog’s paws unchafed. Although steep and long, the hike takes you to a ridgetop that is seldom visited and that offers fantastic views. Unless you return the way you came, the second half of the hike takes you cross-country into a rapid descent down rock-free slopes and old avalanche chutes into Herman Gulch. Sign in at the register, then proceed on a narrow trail for a short distance to a Forest Service sign indicating Herman Lake to the left and Watrous Gulch to the right.
