Winter in Glacier Gorge
Trekking to Black Lake is somewhat tiring on a single short winter day. Spring storms may open Black Lake to easier access as days lengthen through April. The risk of avalanches for winter travelers who ascend along the valley floor of Glacier Gorge is low enough to be acceptable, but caution always is appropriate, especially beyond Mills Lake. Especially in winter, when the sun is farther south, the light on Longs Peak above Mills Lake is more dramatic in the afternoon. Shapes of interesting trees or rocks against expanses of ice make a frozen lake surface more interesting. However, on the way to Black Lake, photograph Longs Peak at Mills Lake in the morning in case storm or wind hide the peaks behind snow on your way back. But hope to reshoot in the afternoon. Highlights: Mills Lake, Black Lake.
