Windy Peak Trail

Although no gold was found in what is today Golden Gate Canyon State Park, the Golden Gate Canyon Road was built to reach the gold bonanza camps in Black Hawk and Central City, southwest of here. In subsequent decades, the land was used for farming and ranching. The state began acquiring land for the park in 1960. Today, 14,000 acres of meadows, forests, and peaks offer a backcountry hiking, backpacking, and camping getaway only 30 miles from Denver. A series of interconnected mountain trails make for a fresh experience on each visit. Hiking, biking, and horseback riding are permitted and certain trails are restricted to hikers only. Your pet companion must be leashed.
