Wild Basin in Winter

Wild Basin in Winter
Even in midwinter, the quality of skiing or snowshoeing in the lower parts of Wild Basin depends on the heaviness of the most recent snowstorm. Relatively low altitude and south-facing exposure make snow on the trail patchy, particularly in spring. But north-facing slopes and heavily forested areas hold enough snow to make skis or snowshoes handy until late spring. Backcountry travelers probably will have to carry their skis or snowshoes over some bare sections. At Ouzel Creek leave the trail to trace the course of the creek a short way up to Ouzel Falls. Quieted from its summer roar, this waterfall freezes into patterns that rival its summer drama. Highlights: North Saint Vrain Creek, Calypso Cascades, Ouzel Falls.
