Wetterhorn Basin Trail
Mostly above timberline, this hike offers spectacular views of Dunsinane Mountain, Precipice Peak, Redcliff, Coxcomb, and Wetterhorn Peak, along with superb wildflowers in season. Wetterhorn Pass is an informal name used in this book to refer to the prominent saddle that sits at the upper (south) end of the drainage of the West Fork of the Cimarron River. On a half-day hike to the pass, you will see fantastic wildflower meadows and some of the most rugged alpine terrain in the Uncompahgre. The picturesque Wetterhorn Basin sits high on the west flank of Wetterhorn Peak, south of Wetterhorn Pass, and provides a rigorous day hike or a relatively easy-to-reach destination for an overnight trip. Whether followed all the way into Wetterhorn Basin or just to the pass, this trail is my own favorite day hike in the Uncompahgre Wilderness.
