West Maroon Pass
A day hike to Crater Lake or West Maroon Pass. This trail climbs over West Maroon Pass, linking up with the East Fork Crystal River route and offering one of the most direct trail linkages between Aspen and Crested Butte. It is also very popular for day hikes. Crater Lake, at the base of the Maroon Bells, is an easy half-day trip. This barren lake is one of the most popular backcountry destinations in Colorado and is also a mecca for photographers. More adventurous hikers can make the trip to West Maroon Pass and back in a day. For backpackers, West Maroon Pass is easier when approached from the south. Poor trail engineering has led to hazardous sullying above Crater Lake; watch your step.
