Weller Lake Trail
This shady, melodic climb through the forest winds past diversions kids love—creeks to poke, rocks to climb, and a lakeshore to explore. Better yet, this hike gives most everyone the “I made it to the top!” feeling. As with all high altitude hikes, plan this one for early in the day—prior to the sometimes-daily thunderstorms. The trail begins at the parking area’s east end where it descends into the lush river bottom. Flowering midsummer, look for cow parsnip to shade the shoulders of some hikers with its white umbrella-like cluster of flowers. Your hikers may think of a more descriptive name for the cow parsnip after you point out its regal companion, monkshood, wearing purple hoods along 4- and 5-foot-tall stalks.
