Waldo Canyon
Waldo Canyon is the quintessential hike of the mountains west of Colorado Springs. The well-maintained, popular path offers classic views of the pink and gray upper reaches of Pikes Peak and sun-bleached glimpses of the endless expanse of the high plains. The walking is wonderful; you'll warm up by climbing rather steeply on the exposed slopes above the trailhead, then settle into a gentle traverse above the lovely canyon. Beyond, the route plunges into the riparian shade of a narrow stream, and finally, a descent along south-facing ridges of vivid red leads back to the trailhead. Get to the trailhead early on sunny summer weekends, as the parking lot fills quickly, and bring your own water as there is none potable along the trail.
