Ute Valley Park Loop
Though surrounded by the suburban sprawl of Colorado Springs, the craggy, sparsely forested bluffs and narrow, nameless trails of Ute Valley Park insulate hikers, mountain bikers, and trail runners from the concrete and asphalt of encroaching subdivisions. You’ll find yourself cradled in a haven of shallow draws and climbing hillsides draped in sun-bleached grasses and wildflowers. At the high points of the circuitous route described here, you’ll entertain views of both Pikes Peak and the city that sprawls at its feet. The juxtaposition is striking and thought-provoking. But, no doubt amid the observations you might make about the contrasting environments, you’ll thank the powers-that-be for preserving the juniper-studded wildland of Popes Bluffs. The stark rock outcroppings and the sharp-walled canyon that cradles the stream surely deserve preservation.
