Upper Mohawk Lake
Upper and Lower Mohawk Lakes are very different from each other. Despite its alpine zone elevation, Lower Mohawk Lake, covered in the preceding chapter, is more subalpine in character. So much diversity is offered by continuing on to the higher lake that it is served separately in this description. This chapter treats Upper Mohawk Lake as worthy of standing on its own. Upper Mohawk Trail begins from the south shore of Lower Mohawk Lake and is an awesome goal. The wildflower extravaganza begun on Lower Mohawk Lake Trail continues with more beautiful floral specimens, including the gems of the alpine zone. As the upper lake is located above treelimit, it’s wise to plan an early start to avoid afternoon thunderstorms. Wildflower Alert: This hike is the crowning glory in a gloriously floristic area.
