This fine, diverse high-country hike over gentle but high-elevation terrain requires a substantial car shuttle. This two-day through-hike seems to be relatively popular, some parties combining it with an ascent of Uncompahgre Peak. As a two-day overnight trip, it is a relatively easy way to cross the Uncompahgre Wilderness from north to south. If you must hike rather than drive the 3.9 miles up the Nellie Creek Road, it will be a fairly rigorous two days; otherwise the hike is only 12 pleasant miles.
