Unaweep / Rim Trail
The Uncompahgre Plateau has a natural bench that rings the flat mountain about 200 to 400 feet below its capstone top. The remote Unaweep Trail follows this mid-level bench almost around the plateau, providing eye-popping views of Unaweep Canyon. Trekking the south and west side is heartily recommended. But I advise against going onto the north side because it’s unsafe for average hikers due to poor maintenance and hundreds of fallen trees that create nearly impassable log jams. Some key trail junctions aren’t signed.
