Twin Crater Lakes are near the middle of the Rawah Wilderness Area and provide a full-day hike through oldgrowth forests to a rewarding destination below steep, rocky ridges and mountain summits. Sturdy log bridges allow crossings of the West Branch of the Laramie River. In early summer, flower lovers can enjoy an array of beautiful displays from wild iris and penstemon to avalanche lilies and Jacob’s ladder. Birding enthusiasts may spot a red-naped sapsucker, pygmy nuthatch, or broad-tailed hummingbird. Big-game sightings include deer, elk,moose, and bighorn sheep. In the higher elevations of the Rawahs, snow can remain into early summer, and access to the trailhead via the Laramie River Road is limited by snow closure for several months each year. If you want to extend your hike beyond the Twin Crater Lakes, following the West Branch Trail to its terminus will lead to Carey Lake and Island Lake. These lakes offer another beautiful destination for a full-day trip in the Rawahs,with outstanding views of Cameron Peak, at 12,127 feet, and Clark Peak, at 12,951 feet. Hot summer days can bring mosquitoes from the still water in the area, so plan ahead and pack insect repellent. These trails are horse-friendly and you may encounter equestrians while you are hiking. Fires are prohibited above timberline in the Rawah Wilderness.
