The Lowline Trail
A day hike to Harvard Lakes or a backpack along the skirts of the mountains. This trail makes a high traverse across the mountainsides along the eastern boundary of the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness. This route is best suited to multi-day backpacks, although the Harvard Lakes make a worthy day hike from its south trailhead. Originally known as the Main Range Trail (and still marked as such on some maps), this route has been incorporated into the Colorado Trail, which stretches from Denver to Durango. All trail signs for this hike will be marked Colorado Trail. This route rarely rises above the timberline for long vistas, spending most of its distance within the montane forests of the middle elevations. There are several old mine ruins along the way, and the major valleys that penetrate into the mountains have trails that offer interesting side trips.
