The Colorado Trail: Timberline Lake & CT Trailhead to Halfmoon Creek
In this segment, there are a couple of almost 1,000-foot climbs and descents; but at the end of the segment, the CT is at almost the same elevation as at the beginning. Along the way, you’ll enter the beautiful Mount Massive Wilderness Area at about mile 3.0. At approximately mile 6.0, the CT crosses the Leadville National Fish Hatchery, one of the oldest hatcheries in the Federal system. It was established by Congress in 1889 and is still very active. The buildings are about 2 miles east of the CT’s crossing of Rock Creek. At about the mile 10.0, a side-trail leads off to the top of Mount Massive (14,421), the second highest mountain in Colorado. For those interested in the side trip, it is 3.5 miles each way, with a little over 3,000 feet of vertical. This segment ends as you leave the wilderness area at the Halfmoon Creek Trailhead.
