The Colorado Trail: South Platte Townsite to Colorado Trailhead FS-550
Segment 2 is one of the driest sections along the trail. There is NO reliable source of water after leaving the South Platte River until reaching mile 1.3 of Segment 3. Much of this segment is in the Buffalo Creek burn area and little shade is available. Persons traveling this section should be sure to fill their water bottles at the South Platte River. Complicating the situation, camping is not allowed along the river, most likely necessitating having a dry camp somewhere in Segment 2. The good news is that, after completing this section, water is more plentiful and regulations become less worrisome as the Denver area is left behind.
