The Colorado Trail: Rio Grande Reservoir to Molas Pass
At the beginning of this segment, a jeep road heads down to the Rio Grande River ford from across and up on the right on the Stony Pass Road. The CT follows this jeep road for the first 4.5 miles of this segment. The jeep road continues past the CT turn-off and on up to the headwaters of Bear Creek near Kite Lake, a popular destination for tourists with 4WD vehicles during the summer. The dust from the traffic somewhat detracts from the pleasure of a walk up a rather attractive valley. The meadow just before the CT turn-off was once the site of the mining town of Beartown. However, almost all signs of the mining activity have disappeared .
