The Colorado Trail: Hotel Draw to Kennebec Trailhead
This segment continues to follow the ridge dividing the Hermosa Creek drainage and the Dolores River drainage, all the way to Taylor Lake. The first 9 miles of this segment encounters many infrequently-used Forest Service roads and closed logging roads. The CT stays very close to the top of the ridge. Also, there is no reliable source of water on the CT for the next 20 miles. In compensation, there are many great viewpoints! From mile 13.5 to mile 17 of the CT, it is not unusual to see herds of elk grazing far below in the cirque bottom to the east of the trail. From mile 14.5 to mile 19.4, the CT is above timberline. Some hikers may wish to plan their hike to avoid this section of the trail in the afternoon, in deference to the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms.
