The Colorado Trail: Eddiesville Trailhead to San Luis Pass
This segment immediately re-enters the La Garita Wilderness Area, detouring around some private property. The trail rejoins Cochetopa Creek after about a mile and follows the valley all the way to the base of San Luis Peak (14,014). As you gain the upper valley, notice the hoodoos (odd-shaped rock columns) high on the north slope. Following the CT from Eddiesville Trailhead is the easiest way to get to San Luis Peak for those interested in climbing 14,000-foot mountains. From where the CT passes over the San Luis saddle, it is a fairly easy climb to the top, consisting of only 1,400 feet of vertical and 1.25 miles of horizontal distance. If you are this close, you might as well do it — the views from the top are spectacular! From the saddle near San Luis Peak, the CT stays above treeline until dipping down to San Luis Pass.
