The Citadel Summit Trail
You’ll be surprised this climb is so close to the familiar stretch of I-70 just before Loveland Pass. An easy, class 1 prelude draws you away from the din of traffic and into a stunning alpine basin. Emerging out of treeline, Herman Gulch opens before you, a beautiful network of streams and small alpine lakes. Imposing views of the Citadel formation contrast with the smooth domes of neighboring mountains. As the trail ends, your trek continues. Cross the basin and head up the steep “Fortress Pass.” Continue up a burly ridge to the back side of the Citadel’s two summits. Reach the tops of both peaks with a good class 3 scramble.
