Swamp Lakes
A day hike to a pair of woodland ponds. This obscure trail follows a long-abandoned logging road from the Leadville National Fish Hatchery to a pair of shallow lakes well below the timberline. The Swamp Lakes are more swamp than lake; the larger upper lake virtually dries up during late summer. The second half of the trail is fairly primitive, and junctions are not well marked. The final descent of 0.2 mile to the lakes is an off-trail bushwhack; do not attempt it unless you are confident of your map and compass skills.
