Sugarloaf Mountain Summit Trail
The top of Sugarloaf Mountain is painfully but exhilaratingly exposed-a jumbled hump of wind-whipped talus that drops away precipitously on all sides. The views will leave you awestruck. The jagged summits of the Indian Peaks rise to the west, and the plains flow endlessly to the east. But the panorama of devastation left by a recent forest fire is what leaves the biggest impression. Sugarloaf is surrounded by a smattering of homes intermingled with the matchstick-straight and charcoaled remnants of what once was a lush evergreen forest. The fire damage even touches the trail; at one point, you pass beneath a burled, charred tree trunk that clings to tenuously to the mountainside.
