Stormy Peaks Trail to Stormy Peaks Pass
The Stormy Peaks Trail to Stormy Peaks Pass begins in Roosevelt National Forest near the entrance to Colorado State University’s Pingree Park mountain campus. It travels through portions of the national forest, the Comanche Peak Wilderness, and north Rocky Mountain National Park. Hikers who wish to continue beyond this described hike, to the Stormy Peaks summits,will scramble over grassy slopes and large boulders an additional 0.2 mile and 475 feet higher to the west summit at 12,148 feet.After that, it’s another 0.5 mile with an additional 50 feet of climbing to the east summit at 11,986 feet. This well-defined trail offers a wide variety of hiking experiences, traveling through part of the 1994 Hourglass Fire burn area, where new growth is established. It then goes through aspen, spruce, and lodgepole pine forest on to timberline and rolling tundra abundant with wildflowers. Your hike includes expansive views of the Mummy Range and the Never Summer Range to the west and north. The drainage of the North Fork of the Poudre River is visible to the north and, in its upper reaches, panoramas of the Front Range foothills. To the south, you will have vistas of Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP).
