Stanley Mountain Summit Trail and Vasquez Peak
The Vasquez Mountains make up a small range best known for their northern slopes, where most of the trails for Winter Park and Mary Jane ski areas are cut. This area is popular for backcountry skiers. The beginning of this hike was once within the boundaries of the now-defunct Berthoud Pass Ski Area. Approximately 95% of this hike is above treeline, giving brilliant views of the Gore and Front ranges. The first half of the hike follows a mellow trail on high alpine plains to Stanley Mountain. The second half dips down, and gives you a chance to test your legs and lungs as you press on to three more mountains. On the west side of Vasquez Pass, the land feels very clean and pure and is punctuated with scarlet grasses and wildflowers. On the way back, get ready to push yourself up the giant grassy feature known as “Stanley’s Wall.”
