St. Mary’s Glacier & James Peak Trail
This very climbable permanent snowfield, or glacier, with a spectacular setting is an easy drive from Denver. When it shrinks in the summer, trails go around it. If you have an ice axe and know how to use it for self-arrest, you can have fun glissading on the snowfield. Don’t attempt it otherwise because it is easy to careen out of control onto the rocks and remove valuable brain cells or body parts.
