St. Louis Lake
Beguiling St. Louis Lake straddles the subalpine and alpine zones. Not only is the lake and its flower-bedecked inlet right up the wildflower lover’s alley, but the string of meadows leading to them are calico quilts of color in full bloom. Add the tranquility of deep forests, and you have a terrific high country hike. The trail begins at the end of a long dirt road. Lively St. Louis Creek provides part-time company as the route climbs 1,500 vertical feet through conifers, then eases through flowery meadows. The trail rises and falls until the final ascent that reaches St. Louis Lake three and a half miles and seven dozen flower species from the trailhead. Wildflower Alert: This trail showcases crazy-quilt meadows on the way to a lovely flower-girt lake.
