Square Top Lakes Trail
Georgetown, CO

Square Top Lakes Trail
Square Top Mountain sits to the west of Guanella Pass. It missed being a Fourteener by 206 feet and so does not attract the crowds streaming up Mount Bierstadt on the east side of the pass. The trail leads to alpine lakes as it follows an unused rutted road through a boggy area with little rivulets your dog will enjoy. Begin hiking west on flat terrain, then drop gently into the boggy area, where such wildflowers as little pink elephants, queen’s crown, and king’s crown bloom profusely in late July. From the bog, the trail rises gradually to thick willows and the first of two lakes at 2 miles. Here, carpets of rosy and yellow paintbrush grow near the willows.
