Sleepy S Loop

The open parkland of ponderosa pine at the tail end of this hike is a wonderfully beautiful and peaceful place. Though the views are spectacular and the brief dip into the meadow is nice, the gentle forest is the highlight of this walk. In the moist shade of the ponderosa, the purple Pentstemon and bright paintbrush grow lush in spring- you may even see a delicate wild iris. The sights and sounds of civilization have yet to intrude here, so you can fully enjoy the sheltered and diverse forest habitat. Though this loop is shorter than its brethren hikes within Elk Meadow Park, this jaunt offers relatively challenging ascents and descents. Bring along your hiking shoes and some energy.
