Santa Fe Regional Trail at Palmer Lake
The Santa Fe Regional Trail sits atop the raised bed of the old Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. Nearby are modern railroad tracks, upon which diesel locomotives travel north to Denver and south to Colorado Springs and beyond. Though not a wilderness experience, the thunderous approach of a train in such proximity evokes noisy images of nineteenth-century locomotive travel across the wilderness that once was the American West. A hike along this easy multi-use trail plunges you into the history of both of the railroad and the quaint town of Palmer Lake, which was known for a time as the “Switzerland of America.”
