Santa Fe Regional Trail at Ice Lake
The Air Force Academy owns some of the most scenic real estate in Colorado Springs. This section of the Santa Fe Regional Trail passes through relatively undeveloped academy property, once again following the abandoned bed of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. Ice Lake serves as the trailhead, from which you can hike south into a small gray-rock canyon, or north into the broad meadows and riparian habitats that line Monument Creek. Either way, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the Front Range as you hike. The Air Force Academy has granted access to this section of the 14-mile long Santa Fe Trail with the condition that hikers and other users don’t leave the designated route. The path, though dirt, is flat and well maintained, and is suitable for wheelchairs.
