Sanitas Valley / Dakota Ridge Trail
The Sanitas Valley is canine heaven. That's much of the allure of this peaceful, grassy valley-the fact that it's so accessible to so many pleasure-seeking animals, both two-and four-footed. The loop described here offers year-round access to relative seclusion that is but minutes from downtown Boulder, replete with views east of the high plains, a stupendous springtime bloom of wildflowers and an alpine feel courtesy of shadowing Mount Sanitas to the west. The wide trail offers plenty of room for hikers and runners to share. The rocky spine of the Dakota Hogback, a striking landmark that thrusts skyward repeatedly along Colorado's Front Range, offers more challenging hiking and a chance to watch nimble rock climbers at play.
