Red Rocks and Morrison Slide Trails

The towering, rosy-smooth stone edifices of the Fountain Formation, which also comprise the ramparts of the famous Red Rocks Amphitheater, are just one remarkable feature of this trail loop. Equally as impressive as passing beneath these flaming walls is the view from atop the large, flat plain of the Morrison Slide. From the summit of this jumble of now-stable rock and soil, which once was part of adjacent Mount Morrison, you can see south down the hogback valley to the famed Red Rocks Amphitheater and beyond, east over the hogback to the high plains, and north to the Table Mountains. It is high desert up on the slide, studded with yucca and cactus, but enough grass grows in the rocky soil to feed a small herd of deer, which can be seen most easily near sunrise and sunset.
