Peak 1 Summit Trail – Tenmile Peak Traverse
This is the easiest trailhead to reach of any hike in this book; the drive is relatively short from metro areas. I must have passed these mountains a hundred times, every time making a mental note to find out what they were and climb them. My curiosity served me well, as the hike and scramble on these two is a blast. The lower portion of the hike takes you through the ruins of an old mining town that was twice flattened by avalanches. Climbing above treeline offers great views of the city and reservoir below. You also get a sneak peek at hidden lakes and mountains that you can’t spot from I-70. The class 3 ridge between the two keeps you on your toes! Much like the nearby Gore Range, the less-traveled parts of these mountains are dotted with fossils and seashells.
