Pass and Coal Creek Loop
This hike makes a loop above Coal Bank Pass via Pass Creek Trail to the foot of impressive Engineer Mountain then north to return on Coal Creek Trail. You can also climb Engineer Mountain via Pass Creek Trail. The wildflowers are spectacular in many sections of this hike during July and early August. Several places offer great views of the West Needle Mountains in the Weminuche Wilderness to the east and north to the mountains between Silverton and Telluride. The final 1.3 miles of the hike are along U.S. Route 550 and can be avoided with a car shuttle.
