Narrow Guage Trail
Unadulterated bliss! This peaceful trail follows the North Fork of the South Platte River as it meanders through a stunning valley punctuated by huge, smooth rock outcrops. Perhaps a coyote will mark your progress from the broad meadow on the other side of the river. Pine Valley is not simply a natural wonderland. The impressive log-and-stone Pine Valley Lodge once served as a retreat for VIPs visiting Denver. The small lake below the lodge, which encircled by a trail perfect for beginning hikers, was once a kind of natural refrigerator- large chunks of ice were carved from the pond in winter and shipped by train to Denver to be used in iceboxes.
