Narrow Gauge Trails
This peaceful trail follows the North Fork of the South Platte River as it meanders through a stunning valley punctuated by huge, smooth rock outcrops. Perhaps a coyote will mark your progress from the broad meadow along the river, or elk will gather to feed on the meadow’s abundant grasses. Perhaps you will see a hawk scanning the valley floor for prey. Or perhaps you will see no other creature at all, and simply walk in solitude through a landscape sculpted by the Platte. Pine Valley is not only a natural wonderland. The impressive log-and-stone Pine Valley Lodge once served as a retreat for VIPs visiting Denver. The small manmade lake below the lodge, which is encircled by a trail perfect for beginning hikers, was once a kind of natural refrigerator— large chunks of ice were carved from the pond in winter and shipped by train to Denver to be used in iceboxes.
