Mount Wilcox and Otter Mountain Trail
Silver Dollar Lake Trail is famous for its wildflowers but it is also the gateway to a satisfying loop trip above timberline that skirts Square Top Mountain’s north face and climbs a Thirteener and a 12,000-foot peak. Only attempt this hike early in the day and in good weather. There is no easy way to seek shelter from a thunderstorm once you are past Silver Dollar and Murray Lakes. Most maps do not show a trail to Mount Wilcox and Otter Mountain, although the loop hike is regularly featured in trip schedules of the Colorado Mountain Club. Still, you will need your topographic map—it will prove useful on the way down from Otter Mountain even though your canine companion will probably be leading the way.
