Mount Sopris Summit Trail
Sopris is yet another peak that begs to be climbed. The long trail to Thomas Lakes is quite scenic and travels through open meadows and friendly forests. Once you reach Thomas Lakes you’ll tour the twin summits via the east ridge. This is one of my favorite ridge walks in all of Colorado. After an initial push on rocky talus to the top of “Nopris,” you are granted access to the rolling ridge to the East Summit. Views of the river of gray talus that flows down the north face are stunning; there are even ripples and contours that make it look like a molten lava flow (or a giant river of cake batter). Gaining the two summits will leave you scratching your head and wondering which is truly higher.
