Mount Shavano and Tabeguache Peak

Endurance is required, but no technical skill, in hiking up a pair of Sawatch Range giants. When hiking up fourteeners, there are two types of difficulty. There is the technical difficulty related to the care, dexterity and skill required in negotiating rocky terrain. There is also the stamina required. Length and elevation gain are important in this second category. These two fourteeners pose no technical difficulties in good weather, but do require stamina and endurance. This is only one of several ascent routes of these two high peaks. The route uses a small segment of the Colorado Trail, before ascending past the unique snow pattern, visible for miles around, known as the “Angel of Shavano,” from a romantic (and dubious) legend centering on an Indian princess (who no doubt worked for the local Chamber of Commerce.) The snow usually melts by July.
