Mount Sanitas Summit Loop
Mount Sanitas also is one of the most rewarding. The trail to the top of the rolling peak is challenging; the rocky, sparsely forested terrain commands attention. But so do the great views! The plains stretch away to the east, and the white-capped Indian Peaks rise to the west. The descent from the forested summit is also tricky in spots, but the rock formations (and art) are pleasant diversions. And in the Sanitas Valley, at the foot of the mountain, the hike finishes in a peaceful stroll through a quiet meadowland. Timing on this hike is difficult: If you try to keep up with the aerobic animals who run the trail, you could do it in an hour. Most will choose a more leisurely pace, though they may have to pass a young child en route.
