Mount Sanitas and Mount Sanitas Valley Trails
Undoubtedly one of the longest and most strenuous hikes in this book, Mount Sanitas is also one of the most rewarding. The trail to the top of the rolling peak is challenging; the rocky, sparsely forested terrain commands a hiker’s attention. But so do the great views! The plains stretch away to the east, and the white-capped Indian Peaks rise to the west; the vistas are infinitely rewarding. The descent from the forested summit is tricky in spots, but the rock formations (and modern rock art) along the path are pleasant diversions. And in the Mount Sanitas Valley, at the foot of the mountain, the hike finishes with a peaceful stroll through a quiet meadow along a wide trail that is easily shared by hikers, dog walkers, and trail runners. The loop described here offers access to relative seclusion just minutes from downtown Boulder. The rocky spine of the Dakota Hogback, a striking landmark that thrusts skyward repeatedly along Colorado’s Front Range, offers more challenging hiking and a chance to watch nimble rock climbers at play. Timing this hike is difficult: If you try to keep up with the aerobic animals who run the trail, you could do it in an hour. Most will choose a more leisurely pace, and if properly coaxed, even a young child can climb this friendly mountain.
