Mount Ida Summit Trail – Chief Cheley Peak Traverse
As soon as you leave the crowds behind at the parking lot, the walk along the Continental Divide opens up vast tracts of alpine meadows for your enjoyment. Views are spectacular throughout the hike, especially of the pockets of lakes to the east when you near the summits of these two mountains. Wildlife viewing is exceptionally good in RMNP, and this area is no exception. Elk, mule deer, marmot, pika, ptarmigan, and more mingle in the trees and on the tundra. After you have reached Ida, the solid scramble over to Chief Cheley may inspire you to continue east via the optional route to Cracktop, Mount Julian, and Terra Tomah Mountain.
