Mount Herman

The trail to Mount Herman is one of those semi-secret hikes that conceals a number of wildflower surprises, including an endemic coralbell relative, Hall’s alumroot. For much of the way, the two-mile trek to the summit is shaded. The flower count, in accordance with fickle Rocky Mountain springs, varies widely each year. When spring is warm and early, the same week in June may yield twice the wildflower species as the following year, when a late snowpack and cold temperatures could delay flowering. Located northwest of Colorado Springs near Monument in Pike National Forest, the Mount Herman trail begins in a small shady ravine with a tiny creek. It climbs to a pocket meadow and then rises steeply, topping out at an impressive view of Pikes Peak and the vast High Plains. Wildflower alert: An endemic saxifrage, Hall’s alumroot, grows in the pink Pikes Peak granite.
